What Happens if Something Is Damaged During a Cleaning Visit?
Updated ·By Josh Swigart
Accidents can happen in any home, even with a careful cleaner. If something is damaged during a cleaning visit, a few simple steps make it easier to sort out. Here is what to do, what a good cleaning company should do next, and how we handle it at Moore Cleaners.

Your home is full of things that matter to you. When you let a cleaner in, you should know what happens if something goes wrong. It is better to ask before you book than to find out after a problem.
What to do if you find damage
If you notice damage after a cleaning visit, these steps help you and the company resolve it quickly.
- Take photos. Photograph the damaged item from a few angles, and include a wider photo that shows where it was in the room.
- Keep the pieces. If something is broken, do not throw it away yet. The pieces can help show what happened and whether a repair is possible.
- Write down what you know. Note the date of the visit, when you found the damage, and anything useful about the item, such as its age, where you bought it, or a receipt if you have one.
- Contact the company promptly. Report the damage as soon as you can, while the visit is fresh for everyone.
You do not need to have every detail before you get in touch. A short message with a photo is a good start.
How to report it
Use the contact method the company gives you, and keep a written record. If you report by phone, a short follow-up email or text with your photos gives both of you a record of what was reported and when.
Describe what you found, where it was, and when you noticed it. Keep to the facts. A calm, clear report makes it easier for the company to look into it and respond.
What a good cleaning company should do next
A professional cleaning company should treat a damage report seriously. You can expect it to:
- Reply quickly and confirm that it received your report
- Ask for the information it needs, such as photos and details about the item
- Talk with the person who cleaned your home about what happened
- Explain the next steps and how it will work with you on a fair resolution
- Use its insurance when the situation calls for it
A company that is insured has a way to cover damage that it cannot simply fix itself. That is one reason to ask about insurance before you hire anyone. We cover this and other questions in our guide on what to ask before hiring a house cleaner.
Questions to ask before you book
Ask these questions before the first visit, so you know what to expect if something is damaged:
- Are you licensed, insured, and bonded? Insurance helps cover accidental damage to your property.
- How do I report damage, and who will respond? You should know the phone number or email to use.
- Who will clean my home? It is easier to get a clear answer about what happened when you know who did the work.
- How do you handle fragile or valuable items? Tell the company about anything delicate, and ask about anything you want it to leave untouched.
How Moore Cleaners handles damage
At Moore Cleaners, we are careful and professional in every home we clean. We are also licensed, insured, and bonded.
Report it to us promptly. Email info@moorecleanersnc.com, or call or text us at (937) 993-7228. Please include photos of the damage.
We get back to you as soon as possible. We, Josh and Bekah Swigart, own Moore Cleaners and clean every home ourselves. No rotating crews or subcontractors are involved, so we can tell you directly what happened during your visit.
We resolve it fairly with you. We talk with you about the damage and agree on a fair way to put it right. When it is necessary, we contact our insurance company.
You can also reduce risk before the first visit. Our cleaning checklist has space for areas to focus on and areas to skip. During a standard clean, we wipe available surfaces without moving items. During a deep clean, we move items as part of the agreed work. If you have something fragile or valuable, tell us during the walkthrough. We can add it to the areas to skip on your checklist.
Questions before you book?
We are happy to talk about how we care for your home. Ask us anything during your walkthrough, or see our cleaning services to learn more.
